Adversity often arrives uninvited - through illness, loss, heartbreak, or collapse. But what if, rather than something to fight or flee, adversity could become a mirror? A moment of reckoning. A call inward.
This is what I have witnessed time and time again in my naturopathic clinic: those who carry not just the weight of their symptoms, but the unspoken burdens that may have contributed to them. One such person is Ms D.
She has generously given me permission to share her story, though we will know her only as Ms D. She lives with arthritis - chronic, painful, ever-present. But what she carries runs deeper than physical inflammation. She is the one everyone relies on. The helper. The caregiver. The quiet warrior who tends to others while quietly ignoring her own needs.
One day, through tears and clenched fists, she asked me,
“Is it okay if I, too, deserve some care?”
That question struck something deeper than any diagnostic label ever could.
She didn’t want to burden others. She didn’t want to grieve out loud. And yet her body had reached its limit. The inflammation, the stiffness, the fatigue - it was speaking for the parts of her that had long gone unheard.
