Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) are common menstrual cycle conditions with a range of physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms that occur in the days leading up to menstruation and typically resolve within one week.
It is necessary to make a distinction between premenstrual symptoms, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Typical premenstrual symptoms encompass a variety of physical, emotional and behavioural changes during the second half of the menstrual cycle including low mood and social withdrawal. In the two weeks prior to menstruation, up to 85% of women and those assigned female at birth (AFAB) experience premenstrual symptoms, while 30-40% develop PMS. The most prevalent symptoms of PMS include mood fluctuations, heightened anxiety, irritability, fatigue, physical aches, breast tenderness, bloating, abdominal discomfort, nausea, weight gain and alterations in sleep and dietary patterns. A diagnosis of PMS includes at least one of the physical and emotional symptoms prior to menses over three menstrual cycles.
