1. Healing: How to holistically heal...with Digestive Herbal Bitters
A few years back, I was visiting friends in the West Village, New York City. As is my custom when traveling, I researched the best tea stores, apothecaries, health food stores, and organic shops in the area. During that exploration, I stumbled upon The Meadow—a place of wonder with an obsessively curated selection of salt, chocolate, and bitters, along with other obscure jars of radical goodness. But the bitters! Oh, the bitters. I have always been captivated by herbal bitters, especially digestive herbal bitters, which include aperitifs (for pre-meal digestive support), digestifs (for post-meal digestive aid), the classic Swedish bitters and all bitter herbs & leaves such as artichoke, rocket and radicchio! This fascination is part and parcel of being a herbalist. We use digestive bitters to remedy many ailments of the gut. Bitters have become one of the most important tools in addressing symptoms such as bloating, wind, pain, discomfort, constipation, or diarrhoea—especially when these symptoms are due to stress and the associated poor production of enzymes, stomach acid, and bile in the gut. Let’s delve deeper into this topic and explore the profound healing potential of digestive herbal bitters.

The history of digestive bitters is rich and spans many centuries, rooted in traditional medicine and herbal practices. Digestive bitters are herbal concoctions typically made from various bitter-tasting herbs, roots, and barks that have been used to aid digestion and regulate appetite. The story of bitters intertwines with the evolution of herbal medicine, alcohol production, and the rise of apothecaries.
