History of Herbal Creams

Herbal creams have been used for thousands of years as topical remedies, offering relief from inflammation, pain, and infection. Ancient Egyptians used thyme and honey in their salves. Traditional Chinese Medicine applies herbal poultices and liniments to invigorate blood flow and reduce swelling. Ayurveda utilises gotu kola and neem in skin preparations. In Western herbalism, herbs like calendula, comfrey, and chamomile have long histories as first-aid solutions. Today, herbal creams in the realm of naturopathic medicine continue this traditional wisdom, delivering medicinal constituents via the skin in a nourishing base of oils, lotions, butters, and beeswax.

Benefits of Herbal Creams

Unlike pharmaceutical or steroid creams, which often aim to suppress symptoms and can thin the skin with prolonged use, herbal creams work in harmony with the body’s own healing mechanisms. They are gentle, multi-use, and well tolerated for the long-term.

Key benefits:

  • Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties

  • Support skin regeneration and barrier repair

  • May be tailored to individual conditions, preferences and sensitivities

  • Free from synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and steroids

Herbal creams can also offer some emotional and sensory benefits—their aroma, texture, and the act of applying them can be calming and grounding.
