1. Healing: The Food Audit

If you’re a patient or client of mine, I most likely would have asked you to do a food audit—a powerful tool for understanding what you eat and whether you are contributing to your health or detracting from it. A Food Audit is a comprehensive evaluation of the quality and composition of the packaged food you consume daily. It focuses on identifying the types of ingredients and additives present in your food and how they may affect your overall health and well-being. This process involves examining all the packaged foods, drinks, seasonings in your pantry, fridge, and freezer, as well as the items you snack on regularly.

To perform a food audit we look at the ingredients listed on the back of each packaging, rather than the nutritional panel. This is because the nutritional panel provides information about the protein, carbohydrates, and fats in the food, which may not provide a full picture of its quality. The ingredients can give you a better understanding of the types of additives and processing that the food has gone through, and help you identify any food triggers or intolerances and those foods with the best nutrition.

The Food Audit is not sponsored but is an independently reviewed guide on selecting the best quality whole food products.

What constitutes a high-quality whole food product?

  • Free of additives such as preservatives, colours, and flavours.

  • Free of processed food ingredients such as refined salt, sweeteners, preservatives, and vegetable oils.

  • Takes into consideration the source (health of plants and animals) and the processing methods (how they are prepared and processed at the factory).

  • Takes into consideration sustainability practices.

This audit helps you make informed choices about the foods you consume, ensuring that you are nourishing your body with the highest quality ingredients available.
